Sky Replacement June 22, 2008

I like using weather and the environment to externalize interior states, so with that in mind I’ve spent the last few days replacing the skies in the gardening sequence.

Looking at the below stills you might think, “neat, just use the sky as a natural bluescreen and voilá.” Unfortunately it wasn’t quite the one-click solution one would hope for, as the sky of course is not evenly lit, and even selecting multiple instances of “blue” doesn’t get you all the way to a clean matte. So, enter that loathsome monster, rotoscoping!

The advantage of course is being able to cue the clouds and control their performance.
