Tonight Jeff and I were welcomed into the world of bonsai. We met Bob Eskeitz who, in turn, introduced us to the oldest cast member of The House That Jack Built. A 75 year old juniper bonsai tree. Bob was great, regaling us with anecdotes and lore. His interest in the art began while stationed in Japan during WW2. His meticulous devotion could be felt in the presence of the trees, all of which were really amazing. I selected two I thought were particularly beautiful, and Jeff “stole their souls”–i.e., he captured them on video.

We’ve seen a lot of calming beauty in Wisconsin during the making of this film. The bonsai trees evoke a consciousness that I hope to represent in the project through pillow shots. An ancient equanimity.

We thank Bob for generously sharing his time and talent!
